There is a part of Chamberí that Madrid keeps quietly to itself. In the Vallehermoso neighbourhood, the streets settle into a different rhythm, wide pavements, measured facades, the particular stillness of a barrio that has never needed to announce itself. It is the kind of Madrid that reveals itself slowly, to those who already know where to look.
Casa MI occupies the top floor of a 1944 building in this quietly confident corner of the city. Reformed in 2024 by studio DIIR, its 100 m² have been stripped back to their essentials and rebuilt with intention. Nothing here seeks to impress. Everything is considered, resolved, and at ease with itself.
The main space organises living, dining and kitchen into a single continuous flow, held together not by decoration but by proportion. The atmosphere is warm and spare in equal measure, the kind of space that asks nothing of you upon entering except that you slow down.
From the living room, a private terrace of 6.5 m² extends the interior outward. Small but purposeful, it sits suspended above the roofline of the street, the right scale for a morning coffee or an evening glass, open to the particular quality of light that only a top floor can offer.
The two bedrooms are placed with a care that feels deliberate rather than merely functional. The principal bedroom is serene and private, separated from the social spaces with quiet intention. The second adapts naturally, a guest room, a child's room, a space in transition. In the hallway between them, rather than leaving the corridor as dead space, a working space for two has been drawn into it, compact, complete, absorbed into the logic of the whole without disrupting it.
The plan also holds a further possibility within it: a third bedroom can be incorporated through a modest reduction of the living area, a reconfiguration that would not disturb the proportions or the feeling of the apartment.
Casa MI is a home where eighty years of building history and one considered reform arrive at the same conclusion, that the finest spaces are not the ones you notice, but the ones you never want to leave.
