Meet Stylist Allan Torp

Allan Torp is a 40-something Copenhagen born and raised interior designer, who recently bought a 200-year-old thatched house up the coast from Copenhagen. From here, he shares the progress with giving the old lady (the house) a makeover with a little help from his boyfriend. On his YouTube channel, Allan shares updates on the house's transformation, provides glimpses into his personal life, travel experiences, design tips, and DIY projects. For more than a decade he has been sharing his opinions and tips about Scandinavian design on his blog Bungalow5.dk. Today, the blog serves as a hub showcasing his design work, featuring his web shop that offers merchandise and products of his own design. Recently, Allan launched three distinct scented candles, meticulously handcrafted in his personal studio.

What is design and architecture to you?
It is my escape. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by interior design and architecture. I love visiting cities and places around the world just exploring with no certain goal other than experiencing the best of the city. I watch every tv program about interior and architecture, which is a lot, and will also be part of a new show on Danish DR soon, where you’ll be able to follow my work, including one of my projects for Fantastic Frank.

What drives you in your work?
I love to transform a space and see something most others don’t. I love creating dreams for people. Transforming an empty space into a home where people can see themselves living is an amazing feeling.

Allan Torp Biggest challenge with your work?
In my interior work for Fantastic Frank the biggest challenge is to bridge my vision with the agent and the seller.

Did you ever have a client that 100% didn’t love your work?
There’s always something that the client doesn’t 100% agree on, but my job is often to bridge their vision with mine. I am hired because of my taste, so I would assume that the client likes my work in the first place. If they don’t like my vision, I of course try to make them like it or alter it a little bit without compromising my vision too much. But I don’t think I’ve ever had a client that absolutely didn’t like my work.

Your piece of furniture you’ll take with you on every move?
I am not really married to certain pieces, there are some I like more than others, but with my job I am influenced the new designs and pieces all the time. So while I really love a certain lamp or chair right now, it will most likely change in a year.

What is your favorite object?
My absolute favorite chair of all time is the Vitra Lounge Chair. It is both so beautiful and so very comfy. But from the pieces I always own, I think my favorite object is my Taccia lamp by Flos.

One color or item that you can’t work with.
I’d say purple is probably the worst color in interior in my opinion. Luckily you don’t see it too often. However, at the moment a pastel version of purple has sneaked in here and there, I am obviously not a fan!

When it comes to your work, what do you dream of right now?
I dream about being my own boss again. For more than 10 years I lived solely from my blog, but with covid, I had to resaddle and got a job as a kitchen designer for a Danish company. For the past two years I have worked very hard on reestablish myself as an interior designer and entrepreneur, I am not quite there just yet, but with one last push, I am hoping to soon be able to be my own boss again. I’d like my Youtube channel to grow and hopefully also see my designs and scented candles sell around the world.

Who is Allan Torp in 10 years?
If there is one thing Ive learned through the years, its that nothing is certain. I started my path with interior in 2010, before that I was working in fashion PR, which I loved and thought I would do forever, the blog changed that and in my 30s I was just a blogger. Now I call myself an interior designer and entrepreneur. 5 years ago I would had thought I would have lived in LA by now, but now I own a house in the countryside north of Copenhagen. So in 10 years, I have NO CLUE! I would like to see myself as one of the most established interior designers in Denmark, maybe write another book, look back at a career on Youtube and maybe own a cute studio apartment in Paris.
