Chic Scandi-style apartment with trendy sand-beige kitchen, south-west balcony and open views
INTERIOR
This Scandinavian inspired apartment is defined by light and air. The generous living dining and kitchen area of around 25 square meters flows into three further rooms and a wide south west balcony. Orientation to northeast and southwest ensures sun at different times of day while the balcony projects outward to follow the course of the sun and shield from view.
The floor plan is intuitive and well considered. Two rooms are accessed via the hallway while the main living space opens into a study. The bathroom sits centrally and is naturally lit by a long skylight, integrating a built in cupboard for washing machine and dryer.
The renovation of 2022 was guided by a sense of refined simplicity. A wide opening between hall and living area enhances the impression of openness. Newly laid ash mosaic parquet, inspired by 1950s design, runs throughout. Smooth plastered walls and a muted palette create calm continuity. Sand toned walls and kitchen fronts harmonise with large format tiles while brass fittings from Spanish design brand Iconico add a golden thread of detail.
The bedrooms bring subtle colour accents in pale blue and dusky pink. Contemporary tones that refresh the composition while keeping it understated and cohesive. The apartment is a cultivated home, carefully composed down to the last detail.
OTHER
The kitchen features elements by Reginox and Lavabo. Bathrooms are fitted with Iconico taps and Duravit ceramics. A private basement room of about 10 m² provides additional storage.
EXTERIOR
The quarter in Horn was created in the 1950s with low rise apartment buildings embedded in generous green areas. The scale is modest with three floors only and wide distances between the houses. Mature trees and the nearby racecourse add to the lush backdrop.
In the 1990s the buildings were extensively renovated, and since the conversion into condominiums residents have continuously maintained the houses. The architecture is typical of its time, a cubic form with flat roof, perforated facade and evenly stacked windows. Balconies extend asymmetrically, their parapets clad in pale green corrugated metal. The base and edges of the building are finished in dark red clinker brick, a subtle reference to Hamburg’s building tradition.
The stairwell preserves the charm of the 1950s with terrazzo steps, turned wooden banisters and beige brown tiles set against white walls. Everything is clean and well cared for. The clarity of post war urban planning is tangible here, modest and spacious at once, with the added advantage of being close to the city centre.
LOCATION
Horn has long been considered a district in transition. The expansion of the U2 and U4 underground lines, now nearing completion, connects the area directly with the city. From the new Horner Geest station the main train station is just thirteen minutes away. By car it is eight minutes to the centre, by bike about fifteen minutes to the Alster. Everyday mobility is easy and flexible.
The neighbourhood itself combines calm residential streets with local favourites. Just around the corner, the café Tante Emma serves breakfast with avocado bread and scrambled eggs, granola with fresh berries and homemade cakes that have become a small legend in the area. For culture, Hamburg’s smallest theatre, Theater das Zimmer, offers intimate performances on its fifty square metre stage. And with the neo Gothic Martinskirche, a listed landmark with original dark wood interiors, the quarter holds onto a sense of history.
Horn today is a mix of new infrastructure, lived tradition and a neighbourhood feel that is quietly becoming one of Hamburg’s most interesting addresses.
