In one of the most vibrant areas of Madrid, El Patio is set within a building with a layered cultural past, once a theatre and later a cinema. Today, it houses a residence defined by calm, materiality and a strong connection to its interior space.
Rebuilt in 2025, the apartment balances contemporary design with the character of the original structure. The entrance hall, finished with marble panelling, introduces the material language that runs throughout the home.
From here, the space opens into a linear kitchen of almost six metres, conceived as a central architectural element. Natural stone surfaces, walnut cabinetry and integrated appliances are combined with an original steel column, preserving a trace of the building’s industrial past.
The living and dining areas unfold around the kitchen in a fluid sequence. Nearly three-metre-high ceilings and carefully considered lighting create a sense of openness while maintaining a quiet, contained atmosphere.
A subtle curvature in the ceiling leads toward the core of the house: a private planted patio. This outdoor room functions as the centre of the home, bringing light, air and vegetation into the interior. Built-in seating and integrated storage allow the space to be used throughout the day, offering a rare sense of retreat within the city.
The sleeping area includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The secondary bedroom opens directly onto the patio, extending the interior outward. The main suite is defined by a more intimate material palette, with a bathroom finished in red travertine. A second bathroom, in nero marquina marble, is conceived as a more sculptural and minimal space.
The apartment has been designed with a consistent approach to material and detail. Custom-made furniture, developed in collaboration with artists and designers, integrates seamlessly into the architecture. Climate control is zoned across three areas, and a smart lighting system allows for adaptable atmospheres throughout the day.
El Patio is a residence organised around its interior garden. A quiet space within the city, where architecture and materiality shape a more contained way of living.
