A first-floor apartment in Santos defined by its 205 m² private garden, designed with a fountain and mature planting that gives it the presence of a small private square. The 145 m² interior has been fully renovated in 2025 by L’Elephant Interior Designers, combining preserved architectural features with updated systems and materials. The result is a home where outdoor space and interior character coexist.
The apartment is organised around two living areas connected to the garden. Large openings extend the interior outward, allowing the garden to function as part of daily life. Designed by landscape architect Júlio Moreira, it includes a fountain and a range of mature planting. Its scale, depth and lack of overlooking buildings create a rare level of privacy, while a garden house at the far end supports different uses across the space.
Inside, the renovation respects the proportions of the original building while introducing a more expressive interior language. Pattern, colour and material appear throughout in a layered way, balanced by original elements such as timber flooring and preserved ceilings. The main living room and principal bedroom retain their ornate ceilings, anchoring the apartment within its period context.
The kitchen combines original Portuguese tiles with new cabinetry and Portuguese marble surfaces. It is fully equipped with new integrated appliances. Adjacent to it, the dining area reflects a more expressive material approach, contributing to the overall character of the home. A separate laundry room supports daily use.
The layout includes two main bedrooms and an additional room that can function as an office or guest space. The principal bedroom incorporates a walk-in closet. Three bathrooms have been fully rebuilt, with new plumbing throughout. Electrical systems have also been fully updated. Climate comfort is ensured through four split air conditioning units providing both heating and cooling across all main rooms.
Material decisions reflect a balance between preservation and intervention. Original features remain present, while new elements introduce a more individual interior identity without disrupting the structure of the apartment.
Travessa do Sacramento sits between Santos, Lapa and Estrela, within a residential area shaped by daily life. Tapada das Necessidades is within walking distance, offering wooded paths, open gardens and views across the river. The area is supported by cafés and restaurants, as well as proximity to CUF hospital, international schools and access routes toward the bridge and the coast. Recent government presence down the street reinforces a sense of stability and security.
