On a quiet residential street in Estrela, this three-bedroom apartment has been recently renovated by a Swedish architect with a clear Scandinavian design approach. The living room opens onto a small traditional Lisbon balcony overlooking the colourful façades of the street, with a glimpse of the river and the Cristo Rei statue in the distance. The project focuses on calm materials, careful craftsmanship and the preservation of original elements, combining Nordic design sensibility with the character of a traditional Lisbon building.
The living room sits at the front of the apartment and receives natural light through large windows and a glazed door leading to the balcony. The room feels composed and welcoming, shaped by natural light and the warmth of the original wooden flooring.
Two additional rooms extend from the social area. One is currently arranged as a workspace with built-in wardrobes, while the second functions as a comfortable bedroom. Both rooms receive natural light through their windows, maintaining a quiet and private atmosphere.
The kitchen sits at the rear of the apartment and is one of the most generous spaces in the home. Custom cabinetry runs along both sides, creating a practical working layout with clear circulation through the room. The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, hob and dishwasher and features elegant stone surfaces with a sculpted travertine sink. At the far end, a built-in bench and table sit beside a large window, creating a natural spot for breakfast or a quiet coffee.
Next to the kitchen, the main bedroom suite offers generous proportions and integrated wardrobes. The adjoining bathroom continues the material palette used throughout the home and benefits from natural light through a large window.
Across the apartment, the renovation prioritised material continuity and detail. Original pigmented wooden floors have been carefully preserved, bringing warmth and character to the interior. Custom wardrobes, bathroom furniture and kitchen cabinetry were designed specifically for the space, while wash basins and the kitchen sink are carved from natural Silver Travertine, reinforcing the calm material palette.
The apartment sits within a traditional Lisbon building dating from before 1951 and is located on the third floor. Estrela remains one of Lisbon’s most established residential neighbourhoods, shaped by small cafés, bakeries and local shops. The Basílica da Estrela and its gardens are within walking distance, while the restaurants and cultural life of Lapa sit nearby, together with easy access to the riverfront.
