Elegant period home combining classic charm, light and contemporary comfort
INTERIOR
The apartment blends the classic elegance of a Berlin period building with a timelessly clean aesthetic. Light, proportion, and craftsmanship define its character. High stucco ceilings with delicate profiles, original wooden floorboards, and traditional double-hung windows lend the rooms a calm, natural atmosphere.
The floor plan is precisely composed. From the entrance hall, French doors open into the east-facing living room and a spacious bedroom, both marked by brightness and clear architectural lines. A third room at the rear offers flexibility as a workspace or private retreat.
The eat-in kitchen is bathed in light and fitted with a custom Alno kitchen and Siemens appliances. The bathroom, finished with natural stone tiles, underfloor heating, and Hansgrohe fittings, exudes understated luxury. A separate guest WC completes the layout. In the hallway leading to the kitchen, a ceiling-high built-in closet measuring approximately 60 centimeters wide and 2.50 meters high provides additional storage. Electrical connections for window shutters are already in place.
Every detail has been carefully curated: paneled doors with historic fittings, finely restored stucco rosettes, and the matte patina of the floorboards combine to create a coherent, harmonious whole. The building itself was extensively renovated in 2022 and comprises only 20 units, offering a quiet setting in the heart of the city.
EXTERIOR
The building on Sorauer Straße stands within one of Kreuzberg’s most distinctive and culturally significant Wilhelminian-era neighborhoods. Built in the 1870s to the plans of developer Paul Emil Haberkern, the ensemble is now a listed cultural monument. Conceived originally as workers’ housing, it was defined by an urban layout unique at the time: rather than traditional street-facing blocks, parallel rows of side wings formed the so-called Haberkerns Hof.
The front buildings, with their clearly structured, classically proportioned façades, continue to shape the neighborhood’s cohesive appearance. Fine cornices, stucco ornamentation, and a balanced rhythm of windows and wall surfaces exemplify Wilhelminian architecture at its best.
The entrance and staircase still convey this historic spirit. High arched openings, profiled wooden balustrades, and a generously scaled stairwell create a calm, almost solemn atmosphere. The original front door with fanlight and preserved wall paneling further reflect the craftsmanship of the late 19th century.
The building is a striking testament to Berlin’s urban development during that period—defined by functional density, architectural clarity, and the ensemble character that continues to shape the streetscape of the Wrangelkiez.
LOCATION
Around Sorauer Straße, urban energy meets an inviting neighborhood atmosphere. Just around the corner, Annelies Café offers breakfast under plane trees, while Tuna's Gemüse Kebab is among the city’s best-known spots for fast, authentic street food. Markthalle Neun, with its curated mix of regional produce, street food, and artisanal goods, is also just a short walk away.
Transport links are excellent: the Schlesisches Tor U-Bahn station is only a few minutes’ walk, with additional bus lines and a convenient connection to the Ringbahn via Görlitzer Park. Travel time to Berlin Hauptbahnhof is around 20 minutes, and to Berlin Brandenburg Airport just over 30 minutes.
The location combines urban density with a remarkable quality of life. Parks, water, culture, and culinary highlights converge here more closely than almost anywhere else in the city.
