INTERIOR
The "Neptun" apartment at LAIKA am Tacheles combines bold, contemporary architecture by Brandlhuber+ Muck Petzet with the historical character of the Tacheles complex in Berlin-Mitte.
The layout is open and flowing, with a seamless transition from the stainless steel kitchen through the dining area into the spacious, light-filled living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and open onto an east-facing balcony that stretches the full width of the apartment; creating a generous outdoor extension of the living area.
The sleeping area is subtly partitioned by flexible built-in elements, allowing for a clearly defined space while maintaining the open feel. If desired, the layout allows for the creation of a second, separate bedroom. The walls in this zone are lined with Swiss pine paneling, adding a calming, natural quality to the space.
The elegant bathroom is directly accessible from the sleeping area and features a walk-in rain shower, Laufen ceramics, and deep blue Mutina tiles as a striking design accent. Underfloor heating ensures a pleasant indoor climate throughout the year.
Residents enjoy access to the building’s exclusive Health Club & Spa, and an underground parking space is optionally available.
EXTERIOR
Am Tacheles Laika redefines what’s possible on a challenging urban plot. Tucked into a narrow slice of land, bordered by a firewall and crisscrossed by access requirements - including a fire exit for a neighboring building - the site was initially zoned for commercial use and dismissed by developers. With limited usable ground floor space due to delivery and parking access, the plot seemed destined to remain unused.
Instead, architects Brandlhuber+ Muck Petzet turned this overlooked void into an architectural opportunity. Their response: a vertical stack of compact, flexible residential studios tailored to Berlin’s growing demand for single-person housing.
True to their avant-garde ethos, the duo created a bold structure that commands attention. The building’s geometric form is accentuated by a richly textured material palette - Swiss pine, exposed concrete, glazed ceramic tiles, and gleaming stainless steel - all coming together to form a layered, expressive façade.
What could have been a constraint became a canvas. Laika now stands as a striking example of how design can transform even the most limited spaces into something extraordinary.
