Tucked into a narrow slice of land, bordered by a firewall and crisscrossed by access requirements - including a fire exit for a neighboring building - the site was initially zoned for commercial use and dismissed by developers. With limited usable ground floor space due to delivery and parking access, the plot seemed destined to remain unused.

Instead, architects Brandlhuber+ Muck Petzet turned this overlooked void into an architectural opportunity. Their response: a vertical stack of compact, flexible residential studios tailored to Berlin’s growing demand for single-person housing.

True to their avant-garde ethos, the duo created a bold structure that commands attention. The building’s geometric form is accentuated by a richly textured material palette - Swiss pine, exposed concrete, glazed ceramic tiles, and gleaming stainless steel - all coming together to form a layered, expressive façade.

What could have been a constraint became a canvas. Laika now stands as a striking example of how design can transform even the most limited spaces into something extraordinary.
