INTERIOR
In the heart of Mitte, where avant-garde design meets cultural heritage, this studio apartment in the LAIKA at Tacheles development redefines compact living with architectural sophistication. Designed by the renowned firm Brandlhuber+ Muck Petzet, the space is part of the iconic Tacheles site - a bold reinterpretation of Berlin’s creative legacy through a modernist lens.
The apartment opens into a luminous living and dining space, flooded with natural light through expansive windows that invite the outside in. The open-plan kitchen is a sculptural centerpiece in brushed stainless steel - elegant, minimalist, and fully concealable. With a simple gesture, the entire kitchen can be discreetly closed off, allowing the space to shift seamlessly from functional to serene.
The layout exemplifies intelligent, flexible planning. Movable elements and subtle architectural transitions create gentle zones within the open space, maintaining both flow and privacy. A dedicated sleeping nook is tucked away, its walls clad in natural pine paneling that enhances tranquility and supports restful sleep.
The bathroom is both refined and functional, featuring a walk-in rain shower, a mirrored cabinet, and premium fixtures by Laufen. Underfloor heating throughout the apartment provides year-round comfort, subtly reinforcing the apartment’s sense of quiet luxury.
Residents enjoy exclusive access to the Health & Spa Club - a private sanctuary for wellness just steps from home. Underground parking is optionally available, and the minimum lease term of twelve months offers long-term stability in one of Berlin’s most vibrant locations.
EXTERIOR
Am Tacheles Laika redefines what’s possible on a challenging urban plot. Tucked into a narrow slice of land, bordered by a firewall and crisscrossed by access requirements - including a fire exit for a neighboring building - the site was initially zoned for commercial use and dismissed by developers. With limited usable ground floor space due to delivery and parking access, the plot seemed destined to remain unused.
Instead, architects Brandlhuber+ Muck Petzet turned this overlooked void into an architectural opportunity. Their response: a vertical stack of compact, flexible residential studios tailored to Berlin’s growing demand for single-person housing.
True to their avant-garde ethos, the duo created a bold structure that commands attention. The building’s geometric form is accentuated by a richly textured material palette - Swiss pine, exposed concrete, glazed ceramic tiles, and gleaming stainless steel - all coming together to form a layered, expressive façade.
What could have been a constraint became a canvas. Laika now stands as a striking example of how design can transform even the most limited spaces into something extraordinary.
