Penthouse with east-facing terrace - where design meets spatial art
The furniture seen in the apartment, brought in specifically for the shoot, is by Noah Living, a Berlin-based brand known for its modular, sustainable designs. Their pieces, including the award-winning Noah Sofa, reflect a focus on adaptability, minimalist design, and recyclable materials.
INTERIOR
In the heart of Berlin, this penthouse stands as a striking example of avant-garde architecture. Designed by Brandlhuber+ Muck Petzet, the apartment captivates with its minimalist aesthetic, carefully selected materials, and a design that is both artistic and highly functional. Exposed concrete, brushed stainless steel, and aromatic Swiss stone pine create a unique atmosphere that blends raw elegance with a sense of warmth and comfort.
The open floor plan offers expansive, light-filled spaces that connect directly with the city through floor-to-ceiling windows. At the center is the main living area, which flows effortlessly into the dining and kitchen space forming the social heart of the home. A minimalist stainless steel kitchen island serves not only as a practical feature but also as a sculptural focal point that organizes the space without interrupting its openness. From here, you can step out onto the east-facing terrace, which spans the entire southern edge of the apartment and opens the living space to the outdoors.
The layout embraces openness while still allowing for privacy and retreat. The sleeping area can be subtly partitioned with movable elements or fully integrated into the open plan. A walk-in closet made of Swiss stone pine introduces a warm, almost alpine contrast to the otherwise cool, minimalist interior. The bathroom continues this design language, featuring deep blue Mutina tiles that evoke a meditative calm. A spacious rain shower and Laufen ceramic fixtures blend seamlessly into the space, while a wall-integrated mirror cabinet enhances the sleek aesthetic. Underfloor heating adds comfort without compromising the clean architectural lines.
This penthouse offers not just luxury, but also exceptional functionality. High ceilings and a generous layout create an airy, expansive feel. Thoughtful details like the sculptural kitchen island, the pine wood closet, and the immersive rain shower - perfectly complement the overall design concept. Residents also benefit from access to an exclusive Health & Spa Club and the option to rent a parking space in the underground garage.
EXTERIOR
The Laika am Tacheles project is a testament to how architectural challenges can be transformed into statements of bold design. Once seen as an unappealing lot - hemmed in by a fire wall, crossed by emergency access routes, and partially restricted due to delivery and parking infrastructure - the site was originally zoned for commercial use.
But Brandlhuber+Muck Petzet saw potential where others did not. Their response was visionary: a vertical structure of compact, flexible studios that speaks directly to Berlin’s growing demand for single-person living. What could have remained an urban leftover has become a standout example of innovative residential architecture.
The building’s sculptural form and bold material palette: Swiss pine, exposed concrete, glazed tiles, and stainless steel embody the architects’ avant-garde style. The result is a sensual and multifaceted façade that balances raw authenticity with refined elegance.
What began as a set of limitations has become a showcase for creative ingenuity. Laika proves that great architecture can rise from even the most overlooked corners of the city.
LOCATION
Laika am Tacheles is located in the heart of Berlin's Mitte district, directly on Johannisplatz, surrounded by a vibrant urban scene.
