INTERIOR
Industrial loft living in the award-winning building by Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff. This duplex apartment is part of a visionary architectural concept that embodies openness, transparency and the dialogue between city and nature.
Spread across two levels, the open-plan layout features soaring double-height ceilings of over five meters, immediately evoking the scale and drama of a loft. Exposed concrete walls and ceilings, combined with seamless screed flooring, define the minimalist aesthetic, while full-height glazing floods the space with shifting light and shadow.
On the lower level, the entrance hall leads into a generous living and dining area, anchored by a Bulthaup kitchen with stainless steel surfaces and modular elements. This floor also accommodates a bathroom with Laufen fittings designed by Konstantin Grcic as well as a practical utility room.
A sculptural steel staircase ascends to the open gallery, conceived as a sleeping area. From here, the view extends across the double-height space below, emphasizing the interplay of light, verticality and transparency.
The interiors combine restraint with iconic design statements: a sofa and armchair by B and B Italia, custom Kvadrat linen curtains and carefully curated details that lend elegance to the raw loft ambiance.
Residents also enjoy exceptional communal amenities, including a landscaped rooftop terrace with sweeping views over the rooftops of Berlin and a green courtyard that offers both seclusion and social connection.
EXTERIOR
Kurfürstenstrasse 142, known as Kufu 142, was designed by June 14, the practice founded by Johanna Meyer Grohbrügge and Sam Chermayeff. Completed in 2022, the building has already won multiple awards including the Berlin Architecture Prize 2023.
The concept was to create a structure that adapts both internally and in relation to its surroundings. Composed of six interlocking towers aligned with the street grid, the building’s floors shift horizontally and vertically, ensuring that each unit includes a dramatic double-height space with windows to both the street and the courtyard. This flexible system allows for highly individualized interiors while also generating a dynamic, responsive exterior.
Transparency is a central theme. Floor-to-ceiling glazing brings the vibrancy of the street into the building, while the southern aspect opens onto a quiet landscaped garden. By breaking up the block structure at the corner, additional public space has been created. The glass facades, punctuated by horizontal ceiling bands and operable window panels, capture reflections of light and the surrounding city, lending the building a constantly changing presence. Projecting and recessed sections along the street and roofline add to the sense of movement.
Constructed with a steel frame and uncompromisingly modern in its materials and details, the building anticipates new ways of living and responds to evolving urban and social conditions. Both residential and studio building, it boldly redefines the edge between private life and the public realm.
LOCATION
The apartment is situated on the fourth floor, very close to Potsdamer Strasse, today one of Berlin’s most dynamic cultural corridors. Over recent years, this stretch has become home to leading art galleries, concept stores and fashion destinations such as Andreas Murkudis and Acne Studios, alongside acclaimed restaurants including Irma la Douce. Specialty food shops and cafés add an intimate local texture to the urban setting.
The popular Akazienkiez, with its leafy streets and independent boutiques, is also within walking distance. Excellent transport links via the Kurfürstenstrasse and Nollendorfplatz underground stations place Berlin’s main train station only about 20 minutes away and Berlin Brandenburg Airport about 30 minutes.
