Smart living: Historic architecture meets modern clarity
INTERIOR
The floor plan of this apartment tells a story of clarity and restraint, curated with a refined sense of space, light, and materiality. Designed by Berlin-based Julie Hoffmann and Chris Athanasiou, it creates an open, well-structured interior that merges period character with contemporary design.
High ceilings and a flowing layout lend the compact footprint a generous sense of space. White-oiled floorboards meet crisp black and white contrasts, a pared-back palette that lets the architecture take center stage.
At its heart, the living, dining, and kitchen areas unfold into a bright, understated space. The kitchen is deliberately simple: white, modern, and fully equipped with a dishwasher, ceramic hob, and oven, a quiet functional statement.
A custom shelf by MYCS subtly defines the sleeping area, creating a calm retreat without breaking the openness of the loft. Three large windows flood the interior with daylight and frame views of the leafy courtyard.
A minimalist workstation is integrated into a niche beside the sleeping area, discreet yet present. The bathroom stands out as a sculptural black cube with a walk-in shower clad in black mosaic, a large mirror, and clean lines. It is a strong architectural accent within the bright interior.
Bespoke fittings zone and structure the space with lightness and precision. The result is a finely balanced smart living concept that blends calm, function, and elegance.
EXTERIOR
The staircase, entrance, and facade blend seamlessly into the classic image of a Berlin period building, radiating subtle architectural charm.
The entrance features an original portal with a dark timber frame and glass insets. Floral stucco reliefs with peacocks and ornamental motifs convey artisanal craftsmanship and quiet elegance. Daylight enhances the textures and creates a serene atmosphere.
The stairwell opens up with large windows that illuminate the curved wooden staircase. Patinated steps and railings preserve the building’s historic character.
The facade is simple and well proportioned. Its light plaster finish, orderly window arrangement, and discreet balconies give the building a composed street presence. Mature trees in the front yard frame it with a soft green filter and create a gentle buffer from the city.
LOCATION
Voigtstraße is located in the heart of Friedrichshain’s Samariterkiez, a neighborhood where historic architecture meets a vibrant yet relaxed urban culture. The street itself is quiet and neighborly, lined with period buildings and leafy trees that form a soft canopy in summer.
Just steps away, urban life unfolds with small cafés, bakeries, and independent shops. For daily needs, Ring-Center Berlin offers a wide range of stores and supermarkets. Coffee lovers will find a peaceful spot at Cebe Coffee Roasters, known for its excellent espresso and house roasted beans.
Transport links are excellent. Frankfurter Allee U-Bahn and S-Bahn station is only a short walk away, connecting directly to Berlin Hauptbahnhof and BER Airport. The city center is also quickly reached by bike, while the neighborhood itself retains a laid back, almost village like atmosphere.
