INTERIOR
The richly ornamented late 19th-century façade already hints at what continues inside: an apartment where historic fabric meets contemporary design. The entrance hall is naturally lit by a skylight, with antique Orosháza concrete tiles underfoot. Bespoke cabinetry provides generous storage while discreetly integrating the technical infrastructure, including LAN connections in every room. From here, the layout opens towards the expansive living and dining area on one side and the private rooms on the other.
At the heart of the apartment, living, cooking, and dining flow seamlessly together. The kitchen, custom-built by Bartmann Berlin, makes clever use of the space beneath the staircase leading to the roof terrace and is equipped with appliances by Gaggenau, Neff, and Berbel; a Grohe Blue water system completes the specification. Large windows and direct access to the 37 m² terrace flood the space with natural light. A translucent external shading system can be operated by remote control.
Set slightly back between kitchen and dining area lies a library with a bespoke cherrywood bookcase. To the street side, a study can be closed off by two sliding glass doors. The staircase leads up to a spectacular 115 m² rooftop terrace with panoramic views over the city. Its elegant railing has been reconstructed to match the historic original, while a 58 m² sail, adjustable by remote, provides shade and transforms the terrace into an outdoor living room high above the rooftops.
The private wing contains four well-proportioned bedrooms, all fitted with blackout blinds. The main bathroom offers a freestanding bathtub and double shower, while additional bathrooms feature custom-made illuminated mirrors and ceramic fittings by Steinberg. Heating throughout is provided by an autonomous gas-fired floor system with smart controls. White lacquered panel doors and Gropius-designed handles bridge the aesthetic between Gründerzeit tradition and timeless modernity.
EXTERIOR
Gneisenaustraße 51 belongs to the group of listed late 19th-century buildings that define the street. Typical features include the four-storey perimeter block structure, high window formats, bay windows, and balconies. The façade is richly adorned: balustrades, ornamental details, and a broken pediment with oval window reference multiple architectural epochs. A pronounced cornice crowns the building.
The entrance is equally striking, with three steps leading to a grand portal. Inside, original features have been carefully restored: marble balustrades, stone stairs with distinctive veining, a checkerboard floor, stucco friezes, and heavy paneled apartment doors. These historic details, combined with contemporary architecture and interior design, create a distinctive and coherent whole.
LOCATION
Bergmannkiez is considered one of Kreuzberg’s most vibrant quarters, known for its lively mix of cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and cultural venues. The Marheineke Markthalle, with its array of fresh produce and regional specialties, is only a short walk away. On nearby Bergmannstraße, boutiques and cafés line the street, while the green expanse of Viktoriapark with its waterfall and city views offers a welcome retreat.
Transport connections are excellent: U-Bahn and bus lines are close by, as are multiple car-sharing options. Berlin’s main station is around 15 minutes away, and the BER airport can be reached in approximately 30 minutes.
