Caleta is defined by its proportions, materials, and history. Moving through the house is intuitive, with each room reflecting its past while remaining adaptable for new uses. The architecture functions as a living space rather than a fixed object.
High ceilings and generous volumes reflect its 1930s design period, where space was meant to be experienced. Original finishes remain alongside simple Art Deco details - zigzag lines, linear rhythms, and ornamentation that define the house without dominating it.
Restored by renowned architect Alberto Kalach, with respect for the original structure, later additions were removed to improve movement within the spaces. Courtyards and the terrace were converted into gardens, while original floors were preserved, allowing the history of the building to remain visible.
The ground-floor gallery is an open plane of mosaic tiles, with subtle flooring changes marking the former separation between commercial and residential areas. Upstairs, former living spaces have been converted into artist studios – large, light-filled rooms suitable for work across disciplines. The rooftop terrace spans the entire building footprint with a generous, open-air space to enjoy the sights of Santa Maria la Ribera and the nearby towers of Museo del Chopo.
Caleta’s main courtyard, at the heart of the building, offers a quiet garden that provides a moment of pause. Beneath the courtyard staircase, a small fountain adds sound and movement, anchoring the house in calm continuity – a creatives' residence shaped by history and ready for future use.
