A FRANK CHAT WITH JOÃO GAMEIRO

Nothing is accidental in the world of Studio Gameiro. With an intentional approach to design rooted in the cultural, social, environmental, and biological context of their creations, João Gameiro leads with a design perspective that is both aware and responsive to the wider environment where it takes place. In this inspiring interview, we uncover architecture as a craft that comes with responsibility and can serve as a means to create a lasting impact on the human experience and the world at large.

Your design really speaks without words. Every single element seems to have a place in the larger whole while bringing a story of its own. How do you create spaces infused with so much intentionality?

For me, everything starts with context. Before we design, we undertake a thorough examination of the history of the space where we will create, considering its social, cultural, environmental, biological, geological, and cultural context aspects. This context analysis then leads to the concept—it establishes the foundations and rationale for the entire design.

It seems, in a way, it is important to start with the why?

Why is such an important question. In the studio, we question everything, every single day. We start with many doubts and approach the design process through experimentation. When we begin to truly understand the “why” behind each choice, that’s when we know we’re on the right track.

We use the same thinking when selecting materials. We always opt for those that stand the test of time, looking deeper to understand the impact of choosing one material over another. We never do things halfway—whether it’s the cushion or the choice of stone, we aim to create something with value and impact.

What does impact mean to you?

Architecture comes with responsibility. It's not just about creating something beautiful; it’s about delivering something positive, encompassing environmental, social, and cultural responsibility. The goal is to bring about actual change— about making people feel or think differently.

Is this why craftsmanship is so important in your design practice?

I believe it’s our responsibility as spacemakers to honor these traditional crafts while finding new, contemporary approaches that validate their work. By showcasing their value, we can demonstrate that they still deliver something beautiful and help them thrive in our times. Architecture and design involve many people and resources, and we have the ability to make a difference through our choices.

Would embracing this approach lead to a world filled with greater originality?

Yes, of course. We would have things more rooted in context and locality. We don’t need to be traditional in the strictest sense; we can reimagine the original in a contemporary way. We can play, explore, and be creative. The inspiration is always there, embedded in the context. When we’re uncertain, we always return to it. The only intervention is adapting it in a contemporary manner.

What is the relationship between the past, the present, and the future?

The notion of time is a construct. There is only the present, yet the present is also a product of the past. We are who we are because we inherited something that helps shape who we are and how we act. In turn, how we act defines our future. We cannot ignore the past—this is our responsibility.

I want the past to be represented in the spaces we create so that we do not forget who we are and why we are who we are. Acknowledging the past doesn’t mean forgetting the future. The future can only happen if we celebrate and learn from the past. Without the past, we have no experience and no reference.

Architecture cannot exist in isolation; it must engage with the wider world.

I truly believe this. When creating, I enjoy the journey from an idea to its material realization—it’s a reflection of who we are and what we believe in during our time here. If we are to deliver something, it should be something we can genuinely be proud of—something that creates impact and leaves a mark.

Is it about creating as a way of leaving a legacy?

Absolutely. Creating, making thoughtful choices, and inspiring people to feel or think differently—it’s all a part of building a legacy. For me, the most important thing is to live, create, and exist as someone who has made a meaningful impact. It’s about contributing something that helps others thrive. By thinking locally, it becomes less about a single project and more about the greater purpose—the legacy. Giving back is fundamental, creating with intention and long-lasting meaning.
