Historic townhouse with private botanical garden

A unique opportunity to own a piece of Danish history – built in the 18th century, this townhouse offers stunning architecture and a private botanical garden. We talked to the owner of the house to learn more about the history and preservation of the building.

The seller, who bought the townhouse in 2020, has always enjoyed going out into the private botanical garden that belongs to the townhouse on Amaliegade 25C. Here he has picked the sweet plums from the trees in the garden and then pickled them himself.

The botanical garden was built in the 18th century and is Copenhagen's only private botanical garden. Both fruit trees, beautiful flowers and medicinal herbs grow here – from the time when plants were mainly used to cure diseases. In the garden you can also find a baptismal font, which was in use when the place housed a Birth Foundation. Here, unmarried women could go and give birth anonymously, after which they could have the child baptized. Now the garden is for private use only, but the stories about the place live on.

The sellers interest in the historical aspect of the building was of great importance when he decorated the townhouse. The numerous contrasts between history and modernity have been framed to perfection.

– Contrasts have always interested me. I've focused on them when I decorated the townhouse. In particular, the contrast between country and city become very clear, which I think this townhouse is a mix of. It is a rural idyll in the middle of Copenhagen, says the seller.

In the kitchen, the sellers has, with permission from the Palaces and Culture Agency, brought the botanical garden into the home. Here, the agency's own painters have been out in the town hall and with complete accuracy encapsulated the essence of the beautiful botanical garden and transferred it to a beautiful painting on the wall.

Amaliegade 25C– The painting is one of the most beautiful, and I am so happy that it is part of the house's decoration. I chose to install a rustic kitchen that could tone down the romantic painting a little, but without removing focus, says the seller.

When the plum trees wither, the leaves begin to fall off and the days get a little darker and colder, the seller warms himself by his fireplace in the living room. The stone is carved in Portugal and weighs 200 kg. The seller has been involved in designing the fireplace in collaboration with Hellerup Pejse.

“The fireplace can heat the whole house – from November to March, I have it burning almost constantly, as it gives warmth but also creates a fantastic atmosphere in the house.”
