Dusty Deco

We are such fans of Dusty Deco. Kings of eclectic elegance and luxurious rock n roll. Now with a twist of Mallorca. We asked one of the founders Lina Kjellwertz about it all and of course why she choosed Mallorca as her new home.

What trends do you see in 2019 in interior design and styling?
Tricky! I am not great on trends, it is most about feeling for me. But I have noticed that I am less hungry for metals, graphically designed patterns and shiny materials than I was a few years ago. I feel more for pure wood, rattan and textiles with texture in soft dirty tones, such as dirty gray-green or beige-gray and gray-pink. At the same time, perhaps it is because I have become more influenced by Mallorca! It is so beautiful to find polished walls and natural materials here, highlighting the sunshine and lifestyle. I also notice that I am drawn to rough ceramics and abstract art more than I did a few years ago but if that is because it is trendy or not, I am probably the wrong person to ask unfortunately ...

Why did you choose to make Mallorca your home and to expand your business?
My mother has lived here for many years so the visits have been many and long and we have been close to moving for a long time. In the end our friends stopped taking us seriously when we said --”Now we are moving!” because we had said it so often. But finally last spring we took the step, after having bought an old workshop in Palma that needed renovating. That became the carrot to move down! The reason we chose to open our showroom here was because we noticed that there was a gap in the market for Dusty Deco, not as much competition between furniture stores here like there is at home, despite the fact that there are many design enthusiasts on the island and strong buying power.

What does your dream home look like?

Right now both Edin and I are obsessed with “Big Little Lies”  (a series on Netflix that takes place on the US west coast) so a big house that is airy,  white and situated right on the beach where we could have dinner with dramatic sea views..we would not have said no to of course! But then again we are of course keen to get our little shed in Palma ready. Our goal is to turn it into an airy apartment with polished walls and large industrial windows facing the inner courtyard where we hope to have a pool…but so far we do not even have electricity or water but as they say “he or she who waits for something good”...!

Dusty Deco style and expression?

Eclectic and luxurious elegance yet rock n roll? Difficult to put a certain name to it but the dream is to get the chance to mix designer classics with "no names" furniture that have the right feel and patina and then add luxurious textiles with both known and unknown art to give a very personal touch. Lamps are important too, better too many than too few!

Typical client you work with?
Most people have both good taste and nice things but maybe not the time or patience to get the feeling completely right. That is when we can come in and put together an overall impression which at the same time feels personal.
It can also be someone who knows exactly the feeling or style they want, but does not have the time or the knowledge to create it themselves. We offer and provide a complete proposal with mood board and put furniture, art and textiles together and thus create a harmonious and functional home in unison with the customer.
