Just across the road from the Mercado de Arroios, one of the most traditional fresh food markets in the city, we find this unique home designed by the award-winning Portuguese architect Manuel Cachão Tojal.

The apartment sits on the top floor of a corner building from the 1930s and was completely renovated in 2021. The use of materials typical to the period - such as wood flooring, Lioz stone and handmade tiles honour the history of the building whilst the bespoke carpentry creates a warm, contemporary Nordic feel. 

The property includes a master suite with a walk-in closet and separate WC. A second bedroom features a custom-designed bed that sits within the wall and folds down to create a versatile space for guests or a home office. As the living room is positioned at the corner of the building, it benefits from beautiful light streaming in through three large French windows each morning. We love how the dining room connects to the living room through an open fireplace, creating a poetic connection between the two spaces. 

A pine panelled corridor leads to a minimalist kitchen and marquise with beautiful lattice work that casts speckled light on the tiles. 

We asked the owner, an Art Director and Editor-in-Chief what he loves most about living here. 

"Despite its centrality, the soundproofing of the solid wood windows means that we can be in deep silence, even when Lisbon is buzzing outside. And all we need to do is open the windows on the balcony, which faces the back, to hear the chirping of birds, lulled by the church bells."

Arroios is home to a great mix of multicultural eateries, art galleries, and a thriving creative community. Just a ten-minute drive from the airport and well-served by two metro lines within a 3-minute walk from the front door, the location provides excellent access to all parts of the city.
