The Apulian Trulli
The Apulian trulli represent the typical example of recovered and preserved rural architecture, as well as a living and pulsating trace of a history that dates back to the 16th century.
Conceived as supply points for cereals during the Spanish domination, today they allow you to refresh your soul and mind during short or long stays. With its pinnacles of ancient memory and its wedge-shaped roofs, the trullo represents Puglia and the Itria valley, delivering a fairytale image. In addition to Alberobello, the capital of the trulli, the Apulian countryside is a succession as far as the eye can see of trulli and dry stone walls that embrace centuries-old oaks and olive trees.
The structure of this house consists of a trullo with five cones with a 1800 tower attached to an extension where the living area is located. Before the recent recovery, the ruin was abandoned for several decades and invaded by vegetation.
The building is located in the southern part of a plot of agricultural land with cherry trees and secular olive trees in the area of Castellana Grotte (BA)
The soul of the project focuses on a centuries-old olive tree chosen as a hinge between the old and the new. Ancient trulli and modern extension communicate with each other through the semi-private outdoor spaces, gathered between the surrounding walls. The olive tree, placed in the center of a patio, almost becomes a sculptural element that stands out against the white canvas of the lime walls.
Taking advantage of the thermal characteristics of the thick stone walls, the 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms have been allocated inside the trulli and in the tower, while the living area has been planned in the modern part. The "telescope" structure of the latter visually connects the outdoor area of the swimming pool and solarium with the intimate internal patio.
The spaces communicate serenity, intimacy and at the same time surprise with their volumes and colors. The light of Puglia is found in the white lime of the walls, in the color of the red earth, in the winter sea and in the twisted and fairytale trunk of the ancient olive trees.
The colors and textures of the existing context are used in defining the color palette of the coverings and the horizontal and vertical surfaces, reproducing suggestions and evocations belonging to the Apulian landscape.
