Possolo is a rare find. A Lisbon townhouse in Lapa with a true Portuguese soul, thoughtfully renewed and rare in its sense of space, light and contemporary comfort. From the outside, the house feels calm and traditional, its generosity and openness are revealed from within. A private garden quietly extends the living spaces, grounding the house in nature while remaining firmly part of the city.
The house unfolds across approximately 240 m2 of living space, complemented by a generous garden and additional basement and attic areas.
The sense of space inside the house comes from its clear structure. Daily life unfolds across two main living levels, creating a natural rhythm rather than a vertical sequence of rooms. Living, dining, cooking and working take place on the upper floor, while the lower level is dedicated to rest and privacy. Light, drawn in by a skylight, travels vertically through the central staircase, connecting the levels.
On the upper floor, the kitchen sits at the heart of the house. Here, history and tradition are carried with ease: original Portuguese tiles sit alongside custom-built elements, forming a quiet statement that this is a Portuguese house with its own soul, carefully respected.
From the kitchen, the dining room opens as a light-filled space with views towards the bridge, anchored by a custom-made wooden table at its centre. The living room adjoins calmly, organized around a fireplace clad in handmade tiles created specifically for the house by an artist from Porto, designed not simply to fit the room, but to belong to it, accommodating the objects, books and artworks that have naturally found their place over time.
A separate room on this level is currently used as a home office, featuring custom-built wooden cabinetry and a daybed.
On the ground level, the atmosphere becomes more intimate. The bedrooms are organized around a generous central room that functions as a library, reading room and shared retreat, quietly connecting the more private spaces.
The main bedroom and its en-suite bathroom, finished with Viúva Lamego tiles, open directly onto the garden, creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor life. A second bathroom on this level is finished with custom-designed pastilhas tiles, adding a distinctly Portuguese texture to everyday routines.
Adjacent to the second bedroom, a smaller room with its original floral wallpaper, carefully preserved, feels like an act of respect and acknowledgement of what already belonged here. Used today as a guest room, it can equally serve as a nursery or workspace.
The garden is framed by mature monsteras and strelitzias, inspired by the lush character of the nearby Tapada das Necessidades. A century-old bougainvillea defines the space and, for most of the year, turns the garden and the views from the kitchen and dining room, into a sea of color. A lemon and avocado tree add to the feeling of a lived-in urban garden rather than a purely ornamental one.
In addition to the main living areas, the house offers well-integrated storage and utility functions. The basement level provides storage, a laundry room and additional flexible space, while the attic remains adaptable with potential for future development. These elements add flexibility and long-term value, allowing the house to respond to changing needs over time.
The house is set in a quiet, residential part of Lapa that feels established, local and distinctly non-touristy. Positioned between Tapada das Necessidades and Jardim da Estrela, the neighborhood offers access to green spaces, schools and daily amenities within walking distance. It is a place shaped by everyday life, calm, safe and well connected. Making Possolo particularly well suited for long-term living as a family home.
A small poster on the fridge reads: “better than movies”. It feels less like a slogan and more like an observation. This is a house that simply stays with you.
